Jodrell Bank

Jodrell Bank is about 25 kilometers south of Manchester. It houses two radio telescopes and assocaited infrastructure, a "Discovery" centre and a garden. We didn't have a car so we took the train from Manchester to Macclesfield and then a taxi the rest of the way. Probably not the cheapest option but we didn't have much time.

The weather was overcast with showers, and was quite windy, so the telescopes were parked facing straight up.

The Lovell Telescope

The Mark II Telescope

This is a smaller telescope situated within the site. It is used with the Lovell telescope and other telescopes around the country to form the MERLIN array.

Garden

Scattered throughout the garden were these representations of the outer planets (if you count Pluto and Eris). I'm conjecturing that their positions represent their relative distances from the sun with the telescope being the Sun. Finding Eris was quite a challenge as it's at the very extreme of the garden and the plaque is quite small. They are indicated on the maps around the garden, you can see them as the red dots on the meteorite map, above.
